“TAKING CONTEMPORARY NATIVE AMERICAN FLUTE MUSIC TO A NEW HIGH!” - NightDancers

CLARK and SARANTOS, known collectively as NightDancers, enjoy sharing intrumental flute music with a unique style that takes listeners on a musical journey . . . painting sound pictures with original contemporary Native American flute songs - successfully capturing the soothing, mystical and healing qualities which are the heart and soul of Native American flute music.

NightDancers - in their own words . . .

GERA CLARK: I grew up in a house full of music with my mother Muriel playing beautiful music on the piano and me trying to do the same. During this time my Aunt Ursula had tales of adventures and pictures of places out West from her trips. When I hit the age of travel, I exchanged my playing piano for a more portable instrument, a nickel silver-plated flute.

After many adventures and misadventures, I one day found myself about a hundred miles west of New York, standing outside a Tibetan Buddhist Temple, when suddenly I heard the most beautiful sound. Following the powerful, yet haunting sound, I found it emanating from a Native American flute, played by Ed Callshim (Ponca Sioux). After this experience, I finally found a flute of my own at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York.

Later, when traveling to Niagara Falls with my teacher Amy Lee (Iroquois), a deep desire to connect with my earlier travels in the Southwest was awakened. On one particular journey, I found myself retracing my steps of meeting a koshari many years ago and spending time exploring the canyons along the Rio Grande. Eventually I was led to the mountains and the Taos Pueblo, where I heard that haunting sound drifting through the air, and followed it to its source, a little adobe. Looking inside, I met a kind and talented gentleman, who encouraged me to play the native flute. That gentleman, unbeknownst to me at the time, is one of the finest Native American flute players, John Rainer Jr. (Taos/Creek). Leaving New Mexico with renewed faith, I was led, via The American Indian Community House in New York, to Franc Menusan (Muskogee Creek), who became my extremely patient mentor for several years.

On my birthday, I flew out to an R. Carlos Nakai (Navajo/Ute) concert with the San Francisco Symphony, where I learned about the Renaissance of the Native American Flute (RNAF) workshop in Montana. I came back to New York and booked myself a flight to Montana, which was where I met John Sarantos, and our musical partnership was born.

JOHN SARANTOS: All my life I wanted to be a musician. Even after my junior high drum instructor told me I had no rhythm and quit teaching me. Even after being inspired by a Jethro Tull concert only to be dropped by my silver flute instructor on the grounds of being tone deaf - a verdict reinforced by several singing instructors. I still did not give up my dream. I just gave up dreaming for a while.

When I was 45, my mother Demetra introduced me to Native American flute music. The next day, synchronicity struck when my friend Nick Stamas introduced me to the flute music of Coyote Oldman.

Synchronicity struck again in 1996 when I heard Peter Kater and R. Carlos Nakai in concert in Chicago where I learned about Renaissance of the Native American Flute (RNAF) in Montana. After gaining more information on the upcoming workshop by spending an hour on the phone with Penny Light, I turned down a free two week tour to Japan and found myself inside a tipi at RNAF. I have been attending RNAF for over ten years, first as a participant, then as a facilitator. It was there that I met my first two flute teachers, Ken Light and R. Carlos Nakai. My dreams were re-awakened.

Next, my flute journey led me to Eugene, Oregon where I met my flute mentor Charles Littleleaf (Warm Springs), who has shared many sacred places, wisdom, stories, laughter, and friendship with me.

I have been fortunate in my life to have shared my knowledge of the flute with over 1,000 people from coast-to-coast, in a variety of workshops, thanks to the encouragement and support of folks like Bill Tucker, Bob and June Picard, Susanne (Suz) Tarhay, Peg and David Hernandey, and Wayne McClesky.

At RNAF in 2005, I was fortunate to meet and play flutes with Gera Clark. Through the encouragement of Gera’s friend, Bob Hegler, we continued jamming together, often via speakerphones 1,000 miles apart. A year later we formed NightDancers.

Happy 10th Birthday to CD Baby - and an announcement

From: Derek Sivers / CD Baby (cdbaby@cdbaby.com)

Sent:
Wed 3/26/08 10:02 PM
Reply-to:
cdbaby@cdbaby.com

Hi Kenneth -
I started CD Baby 10 years ago this week - in March 1998.
You probably know that I'm just a musician-geek, not a business-man.
Never meant to start a company. I was just selling my own CD, then helped
some friends do it, then it accidently turned into CD Baby. (Ooops!)
Now CD Baby has paid over $70 million dollars(!!) directly to musicians.
And despite the moaning you hear from the majors, independent artists are
selling better than ever. Even physical CD sales are up 30% over last year!
ANNOUNCEMENT:
Friends will tell you that for the past 10 years I've spent most waking
hours, 7 days a week, doing nothing but CD Baby. Last year I just slept on
the couch at the office for 6 months, usually working from 7am to midnight.
So today seems like a good day to tell you that I don't work at CD Baby
anymore, and haven't in months.
I'm still the owner, but haven't been to the office since May. The crew
there is running things better than I ever could. They know more than I
do, and do a better job.
I've made that transition from self-employed to business-owner. (You know
you're a true business-owner when you can leave your business for a year,
and come back to find it's doing much better than when you left.)
WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS?
Because the reason I freed-up my time is to find more ways to help you.
Helping you develop, create, promote, and sell your music makes me happier
than anything. It's still why I bounce out of bed in the morning.
I love it even more than making my own music. (Weird, huh?) By helping
you get your music out to the world, and helping you make a living doing
it, I feel that in a way I'm making more music than ever.
There are many ways I can help, but I'll email you about those next week.
Today was just a CD Baby birthday announcement. Still, I wanted to let
you know there are exciting things to come.

Marketing tips and self-promotion

New Resource: Music Think Tank

I’ve been a fan of Andrew Dubber and his New
Music Strategies
blog for about a year now, and
I recently got the chance to chat with him and
get to know him better. He’s a smart guy with
an interesting perspective on music, new media,
and the changing entertainment landscape.

That’s why I was thrilled when he invited me to
join a new group blog he created called Music
Think Tank. Check it out now at
www.MusicThinkTank.com.

In addition to Andrew and me, contributors
include Derek Sivers (CD Baby), Anthony Volodkin
(Hype Machine), Bruce Warila (Unsprung Media),
Ariel Hyatt (CyberPR), Syd Schwartz (Capitol
Records), and more. Good company indeed.

See the complete list of Music Think Tank
authors here.

It’s off to a good start with diverse
conversations about music trends and tactics.
The cool thing is, since no one person has all
the answers, we won’t always agree with each
other. Which makes it more interesting for
readers and gives a wider perspective on each
topic covered.

Check it out!

Early Bird Discount Ends April 1

It’s good to know there’s a lot of buzz about
the Indie Buzz Bootcamp, the weekend music
career workshop I’m presenting June 20-22 in
St. Louis, MO.

Tickets went on sale last week to people on my
mailing lists, and many have taken advantage of
the early bird discount registration price at
this special page:

www.bob-baker.com/buzz/indie-buzz-register.html

In April, Berkleemusic will announce the event
to its sizeable list, as will a couple of other
promotional partners.

With room for only 150 paid attendees, I suggest
you not delay if you are thinking of attending.
Available seats won’t last long. Do what you
need to do to break away that weekend and be
here. I literally guarantee you won’t regret it.

I have an amazing lineup of speakers who will
deliver tons of use-it-now advice in a format
you have most likely never experienced in a
music conference.

Read all about it here.

If you want to bring a partner or guest, when
you reserve your seat, just change the quantity
to the number of people you want.

I hope to see YOU in June at the Indie Buzz
Bootcamp! If you want to save money and make
certain you get in, please reserve now at

www.bob-baker.com/buzz/indie-buzz-register.html

Will You Join Me This Monday, March 31?

Three hundred more people have watched it in the
past week alone. Nearly 4,000 views total. I’m
talking about my video interview with Terry
Prince on the Santa Monica pier.

Haven’t seen it? Watch it now at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUfXB5uY9KA

Terry will be my guest for a one-hour conference
call on Monday, March 31, starting at 9 PM
Eastern. Callers will get a big dose of his
uplifting and empowering message AND be able to
find out directly how he sold 15,000 CDs in 18
months.

There are two ways to access the live call and
an MP3 audio recording of it later.

One way is to join my Music Marketing Insiders
Club
. As a member, you’ll get access to the
Terry Prince teleclass AND more than a dozen
interviews I’ve conducted over the past 14
months, plus future calls as long as you’re
a member.

Details at www.MusicMarketingInsiders.com

Otherwise, non-members can gain access to the
call and MP3 download for $14.95. If you want
to go this one-time access route, use this link
to purchase using PayPal.

However, I guarantee the Insiders Club
membership is a far better bargain.

2. Introduction

Welcome to the March Indie Contact Newsletter.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the online seminar
with booking guru Jeri Goldstein. It was nice to connect with
many of you. I apologize for having to wrap it up so quickly.
We had planned on having a 90 minute session, but an hour
into it a message popped up informing Jeri that our time was
done.

Jeri had a flood of questions sent to her and barely had time
to scratch the surface. Because of this, she is going to hold a
second tele-seminar (by herself) on April 1st. You can sign up
for this additional seminar here (there is no charge for this event)
http://performingbiz.com/interviews/April1AgentsTeleseminar.html

Jeri is still working away on the FAQ page that she promised
as well. I’ll post her answers to all of your booking questions in
next month’s newsletter.

This month’s article focuses on a problem that I’ve had to deal
with ever since I started the Indie Bible nine years ago. It’s in
regard to artists that contact music services that don’t feature their
style of music. The article was originally created for a friend’s
newsletter and focuses on contacting venues and how to use The
Indie Venue Bible
, but the principles stated apply to ANY area of
the music business.

Last month a radio station that I had listed in this newsletter
asked to be removed because they were getting bombarded
from musicians of other genres than the one they requested
(in this case it was a Punk radio show).

All I ask is that before you contact any of the listings in this
newsletter, please check their website to ensure that your music
fits the format.

Remember, If you have a service that can help out artists
or songwriters and would like to be listed in this newsletter,
please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Just e-mail me your
details. indiecontactnewsletter@rogers.com

As is the case every month, there is a large group of new
contacts that can help you to gain more exposure for your
music. So dig in and enjoy the March edition of the
Indie Contact Newsletter!

David Wimble
Editor, The Indie Contact Newsletter
indiecontactnewsletter@rogers.com

To view March’s music listings and this month’s article,
visit the web address at the bottom of this newsletter.

I’ll also place the address here. For some reason the address at the
bottom of this page has not been showing up for some of you.

*** HOW TO WRITE HIT MELODIES, Part 1, by Molly-Ann Leikin
After the title, the tune is the most important part of the song. The way
our brains are wired, the melody is the first thing we hear. If we like
it, we’ll stay tuned and listen for the words. If the tune
doesn’t get to us, it’s over.
Melodies need hooks. Without them, nobody will ever hear your work, no
matter how brilliant the lyric. I know lyricists won’t be happy to
hear this, but it’s true and knowledge is power.
In constructing a melody, there are several guidelines to follow. I
recommend to all my clients, no matter where in the world they are
writing, getting to the hook/chorus, within twenty-five or thirty seconds.
I advise them, and you, to keep their introductions short. The intro is
usually instrumental, and the song doesn’t officially start until
the verse begins. So keep the intro to eight bars or less. Often writers
who are in love with their software wail on and on for sixteen or
thirty-two bars before beginning the actual song. Don’t. Eight
bars are plenty. The audience will only give you a few seconds of ear
time and then move on to something more accessible. You worked hard to
get ‘em. Don’t let ‘em get away.
If we like a melody, it usually isn’t until we’ve heard it
several times that we finally hear the words. You can write a brilliant
lyric, but if it has a weak melody, nobody will ever hear any of it
because the tune hasn’t done its job. The function of the melody is
to grab us in an unguarded, primitive, totally emotional state and hold
our attention long enough for the more civilized and intellectual lyric to
take hold and give us some words to sing. Leikin’s Law is giving
them what they want. Express yourself as only you can, absolutely. You
have a fingerprint as a writer that nobody else has. But don’t
expect a lyric to do the melody’s job.
Parts 2 and 3 of Molly’s “How to Write Hit Melodies”
will appear in the April and May 2008 USA Songwriting Competition
newsletters.

Debby Clinton - Revisited

Hmmmm….alittle bit about me….well I’ve raised four kids, 3 daughters and a son. I have seven grandchildren, six girls and one boy. I love music, painting-drawing, horses, writing, the ocean, gazing at the stars on warm Hawaiian nights, helping others to realize their dreams.

I sang background and backup lead for several during my teenage/20’s years. Had a blast with friends filming a couple skating movies in the summer of 1979 called Skatetown USA and Roller Boogie. You’re in my prayers Buddy, Please get well, God be with you & Lisa, Yvonne, Don, Sean & Bambi. I’ve worked in the music biz practically all my life. During that same summer of 1979, I met my dear friend RG Ingersoll formally of Motown Records, owner of Hotrax Records-The Reno Sound. It was through helping RG to promote his sizzling 45 “Go For It Sucker” to the discos of L.A. with Steve Scott one night that I met Lee Rogers (D-Town Lengend). It was a magically fun night and that’s when I joined the Leandary family of the Original D-Town Records, Inc. of Detroit, (not to be confused with the non-affilated new rap label in Dallas, Tx.) which is to this date, the Oldest remaining Independent Record Label in the world. I was inducted into the D-Town family by The Mr. Lee Rogers, who took me under his wing and believed in me and I will always cherish those memories and him…miss you Mr. Lee, my brother, my friend!

I have also worked as a cashier, a waitress in alittle cafe in No mans land (Nebraska) having to serve “Mountain Oysters” to farmers that loved to slap the backside, but they left big tips lol! I worked with the “Death Wagon” a job you need an Iron stomach for, it consisted of the picking up of dead animals from farms and highways. I’ve cleaned birthing houses of sows, worked on cattle drives herding cattle on horseback the ol’ “Cowboy way”, sleeping under the stars with my 12 gauge dbl. barrell shotgun, 30ot6 rifle & pocket 22, and yeah I’m still a crack shot to this day, years later I would buy a 38spl and 380. My second husband at the time (one who broke my back and damaged my throat) damn near gave birth to a cow when he saw my target practice, how I always hit what I was aiming at (and still do). I have the same knack for the bow and arrow also. I’ve “gentle broke” horses, I don’t believe in saddle/bridal breaking. Horses are Beautiful animals and should be treated with kindness Always, and NEVER whipped or beat! My favorite breed of horse is the Mustang paint, and I am Proud of my Cherokee heritage.

I’ve always rode bareback with sometimes just a halter but most often just me and the horse and barefeet. I don’t believe in bridals with bits, as they hurt a horse’s mouth. It isn’t natural. I like fishing and “No-kill” hunting. I’ve drove limos but I don’t like to ride in them as a passenger. I painted and cleaned houses/apartments, and other assorted jobs here and there. But my passion has always been Music and helping others. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and it is there I shall die, it’s where my heart is and has always been and shall always be. I was dancing the Hula practically before I could walk. And tho my back was broke, I still try to dance now and then. I’ve lived many places but the islands is the Only place I will ever call Home. I’m not into superficial crap like designer labels, Rodeo Drive, Mercedes Benz, golf, snub-nosed upety people who think coz they have alot of money, etc that they are somehow better than the rest. Trust me, I do have friends in low places and am Damn proud to call them friend too! Keep your High-society crap, I don’t want any part of it. I shop at Walmart baby, yeah and Kmart, Target too. I love to hit as many thrift stores as the day will allow, some great stuff in those places. I love wide-open spaces, I am NOT a city gal. I love old muscle cars, hotrods, choppers, gocarts, John deer tractors,Harvesters too and old trucks. My dream car? The 1957 Chevy 2 door hardtop all Original of course. You can work on the old stuff and they are better built, the vehicles today are all look alikes and pieces of crap, yes, CRAP! They don’t last, you can’t work on them and they fold like a tin can in a fender bender. No Thank You, not for me! I also think mankind was not meant to be Veggy’s since the Garden of Eden, I eat meat, and that ain’t no sin! but I don’t drink booze, ya know, beer, wine, whiskey etc.

I’ve lost alot of loved ones because of it. I do smoke (Native American Spirit) straight tobacco no additives, I make my own cigs. But I’m trying to quit LOL…Guess you can say I am part Redneck Woman haha…I spent a lifetime for a year and a half in Texas, Houston to be exact. That’s where I learned to make REAL Mexican and Cajun food with my nextdoor neighbor. Me and my oldest girl who was just a baby then would spend alot of good times down at Red’s barber Shop. He was like a Father-figure for me, looked out for me and my babygirl living in a 1 bedroom garage apartment in a BIG city. We’d sit, talk, laugh, he taught me how to cut hair and I’d watch Red tattoo people, we’d drink Dr. Pepper, 15 cents a bottle, at Red’s barber shop on Canal St. down the block from the S.I.U. Merchant Seamans Hall. Red looked and sounded just like Willie Nelson, like an identical twin right down to his voice, hair, everything. “Hey, Bugger with the “Tigerhead” tattoo, Red & and that tall Black haired Elvis lovin’ guy what’s his name?, where are you all at?” Well that’s all for now……
